OTIS REDDING LIVE FROM THE 1967 STAX/VOLT REVUE!
The Stax/Volt Revue that took Europe by storm in early 1967 is generally regarded as one of the greatest soul tours ever. And of all the Stax stars on that tour, none shone as brightly as Otis Redding.
Backed by the mighty Booker T. & The MG's and the Mar-Keys instead of his usual road band, Otis simply blew the crowds away night after night, holding absolutely nothing back and leaving both band and audience members awestruck at what they had just witnessed. From Steve Cropper's liner notes in this release:
By the time Otis hit the stage you'd think that the roof would cave in if things got any hotter, especially after the dynamic duo of Sam & Dave, but that was not the case. It was one explosion after another. When Otis sang "I've Been Loving You Too Long" you could hear a pin drop, but when the horns and Al Jackson hit "Shake" the audience experienced a high they would never feel again. The incomparable way Otis Redding bounded back and forth across a stage was something unmatched by any other artist. What a joy it was for myself and the band to be on stage backing him - the experience of a lifetime.
In this release, you get two full Otis sets from that legendary tour: the March 17, 1967 show at the Finsbury Park Astoria in London, and the March 21, 1967 show at the Olympia Theater in Paris. (The Paris set was longer because there was not a curfew like there was in London, and also because Atlantic and Stax had sent producer/engineer Tom Dowd over to specifically record that date.) Both sets are newly mixed from the original multi-track tapes, and the CD also includes a 16-page booklet with extensive liner notes.
